Ten principles and its explanation
- Creates opportunities for economically and socially disadvantaged producers
SHOHOJOGITA makes a solid effort to create business opportunities for artisans in a long-term. We know that the key principle or standard of FTF is poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Above all, we seek to guide business to artisans/groups that are committed to their local community and fair trade exercises. - Transparency and accountability
SHOHO tells the story of its artisans through its product labeling and website. We respect transparent management and commercial relations to Trade Fairly and respectfully with artisans, visitors and customers. We have been assessed by ECOTA Fair Trade Forum, and granted membership of the ECOTA Fair Trade forum in recognition of our compliance with Fair Trade Practices. - Provide capacity building
SHOHO has worked with several of its producers for over fourteen years! We avoid leaving any group behind by investing in the development of new designs for them to produce. We continually invest in new design development and shares knowledge about better production skill with its producers. - Promote fair trade
SHOHO actively promotes Fair Trade at the trade fairs it participates in by discussing its work and the work of the FTF with customers and other visitors. We highlight information about the Fair Trade work being done by its artisans in its marketing materials, and discuss the Fair Trade agenda with its producers. - Promptly payment and fair price
SHOHO is committed to ensuring that the artisan and/or producer is paid a fair and living wage in the context of the local economy. We work with the producers to balance the costs of skill, labor, materials and the production process with appropriate profit margins and income for their community in order to create a dignified and sustainable business atmosphere. - Gender equity
All of our job roles are open to both women and men, all adult ages and approx 80% of our artisans are women those who are widowed, divorced and poor family. - Support safe and empowering working conditions
ECOTA Fair Trade Forum arranged training in this regard and SHOHO’s staffs participated. We review the working conditions at each of the production facilities and we are able to visit and promote improvements such as better ventilation, adequate lighting, toilets, first-aid box when considered necessary. We test for lead and ensure the use of safe colors and azo-free dyes. We choose materials and packaging that are as sustainable and locally available as possible. - Ensure the rights of children
None of SHOHO’s producer partners/employs children in production. In fact, all of our producers assist their artisans with efforts to educate themselves and children. Example: The son of our tailor master is getting stipend from a missionary school by lobbying/advocacy of us. - Respect for the environment
The company makes every attempt to avoid excessive packaging, use natural or non-toxic dyes, source locally and sustainably harvested materials such as jutes, sea grasses(Hogla), straws, cottons and so on. Most of the groups have systems for environmentally sound ways to dispose of waste products such as used dyes (all dyes are Azo free). We work with the producers to re-evaluate and upgrade the facilities and working conditions to promote better environmentally sensitive practices. - Respect cultural identity
SHOHO’s founding mission is to promote awareness and preservation of Bangladeshi culture through the production and sale of traditional and innovative style crafts. SHOHO also has promoted the use of the unique and indigenous talents and production skill.
